Why You Shouldn’t Cook Your Food On Aluminum Foil

Like many people, I would bake and cook with aluminum foil. It is a great way to help avoid scrubbing pans after baking. However, what I didn’t know is that when cooking with foil, the aluminum can leach into your food which is bad for your health. Leafy vegetables and acidic foods such as tomatoes and citrus can absorb the most aluminum(1).Cooking with aluminum foil

While cooking on foil, the aluminum can leach into foods, which when ingested can raise the level of aluminum in the body. This is a problem as our body can only get rid of aluminum in very small amounts. The World Health Organisation has determined the safe level for the amount of aluminum a body can consume is 40mg per Kg of body weight per day(2).

Some of the health risks aluminum may cause include:

  • Risk to reproductive health
  • Change in neurological behaviour and development
  • Possible cause of Alzheimer’s disease (3)

Given the risks aluminum foil may pose, it may be time to put it away for good!
