Study: Shockwave vs Corticosteroid Injections for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

A recent prospective randomized controlled trial investigated the effects of corticosteroid injections to shockwave therapy for carpal tunnel syndome over 24 weeks.

A total of 25 patients were randomized into two groups, one for shockwave therapy and the other for corticosteroid injections. The patients were then evaluated at 1, 4, 12 and 24 weeks.

Patients who were treated with a single dose of  shockwave therapy reported feeling improvement throughout the study. These results indicated shockwave therapy to be more beneficial than corticosteroid injections for mild to moderate carpal tunnel syndrome.
