Lumbar Stenosis

Lumbar StenosisThe spinal canal is a passage that runs through each of the vertebrae, through which the spinal cord, and other nerves pass. Lumbar stenosis is a condition where the narrowing of the spinal canal compresses the spinal cord and nerves, and causes potential neurologic symptoms. Patients usually complain of inconsistent pattern of leg and back pain, that may increase with activity.

This condition may be caused by disc herniation, osteoarthritis in surrounding bones that could produce bone spurs that grow into the spinal canal, or other factors

Exercises that decrease stress on the spine are recommended to be emphasized in any treatment plans, such as knee-to-chest movements, and other exercises that flex the lower back.

In-clinic treatment of lumbar stenosis includes

  • Massage therapy à relaxation massage
  • Osseous manipulation
  • Bracing

Majority of patients remain stable or improve with appropriate management.
