We know that sitting too much is not good for the body, but did you know that sitting and poor posture can cause more than just the occasional neck and back pain? Other problems such as poor balance, breathing difficulties, and headaches can be also be caused by poor posture.

A recent health article in the Harvard Health Letter looked into three health conditions linked to poor posture:

1. Incontinence: Poor posture can lead to stress incontinence. When sitting, the pressure from the abdominal muscles can put pressure on the bladder, causing leakage. Poor posture can also weaken the pelvic floor muscles, which can also lead to incontinence.

2. Constipation – Poor posture can make it difficult to pass a bowel movement. Constipation is characterized by having fewer than three bowel movements per week. If you are unsure if you are constipated, consult with your health practitioner.

3. Heartburn and Slow Digestion – Slouched posture after a meal can cause stomach acid to enter the esophagus. This condition is called acid reflux and is characterized by pain in the center of the chest.

It is important to keep your abdominal muscles strong and to practice good posture techniques. One of the easiest solutions is to use a standing desk, as this will help correct improper posture as well as help to strengthen the core muscles.

Other recommendations include taking frequent stretch breaks, joining a workout class, and using proper lumbar support.
