We all know that as we age we tend to lose muscle mass. The best way to slow down this loss is by weight training. But do protein supplements help too?

A study in the April 2018 edition of JAMA internal medicine did not find a link between protein supplements and muscle mass. A randomized study of 92 men with an average age of 73 were divided into four groups. Some received protein supplements and some received a placebo. No significant change in muscle mass was noted in participants who took the protein supplements.

As always, a balanced diet with a good exercise program is the key to maintaining good muscle mass in your later years of life. At the clinic we usually recommend starting an exercise program at an early age, permitted the patient is in good health. If you are unsure, check with your physician before starting any workout routine.
