Vaping is the process whereby a device heats and aerosolizes a solution meant to be inhaled. E-cigarettes aerosolize a nicotine-based solution, mimicking cigarettes. One of the most popular brands of this type of e-cigarettes is JUUL.
Over the past few years, vaping has become very popular. Back in 2015 public, health officials in England had endorsed vaping, claiming it was 95% safer than cigarette smoking. However, earlier this month the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention and the US Food and Drug Administration in the United States issued a warning to the general public not use e-cigarettes. This warning comes after reports of 380 cases of lung illness and 6 deaths being attributed to e-cigarettes use.
This warning is especially important considering the wide usage of e-cigarettes among young adults. Nearly a third of young adults have tried vaping product within the past 30 days. When you couple this finding with the prevalence of asthma amongst young adults (about 7-10%), this rate becomes quite concerning.
Why is vaping harmful? It is unknown exactly why vaping is harmful, but we do know that vaping increases inflammation in the lungs. Vaping can damage hair like projections in the lungs called cilia. Cilia is important as it helps to remove microbes and debris. When the celia is damaged there is an increased risk of infections such and pneumonia. Vaping can also cause wheezing and related respiratory symptoms, which can be a result of an increase in inflammation in the airways.
E-cigarettes can also have a negative effect on the heart. The increase in nicotine can cause heart attacks, stroke, sudden cardiac death and high blood pressure.
And if this wasn’t bad enough, e-cigarettes have the potential to explode if used correctly.
If you or someone you know is using e-cigarettes, do your research and stop using these products. It is not worth the risk.
