Shockwave Therapy For The Treatment Of Lateral Epicondlysitis

A recent study published in the 2018 edition of the Journal of Orthopedic Surgery investigated the effectiveness of shockwave therapy versus plasma rich protein (PRP) injections guided by ultrasound imaging for the treatment of chronic tennis elbow.

Tennis elbow or lateral epicondylitis is a condition in which the insertion point of the forearm extensor muscles become inflamed. This can cause pain, especially when playing sports like tennis or badminton. Patients will note pain when pressing the outer part of their elbow, and when performing gripping and lifting activities.

A total of 63 participants with lateral epicondylitis were involved in the study. It was found that both shockwave therapy and PRP injections were effective at alleviating the pain. Shockwave therapy is a noninvasive safe and effective treatment option that can be as effective as PRP injections.
