March Is Nutrition Month!

March is Nutrition Month and this year’s theme considers how the food choices we make today influence our future health, the health of our communities and the planet. Our food choices impact not only our health but the health of our planet. A diet rich in plant-based foods reduces the risk of chronic diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol and it also helps to reduce the impact on the environment because it uses less resources like land and water.

Here are some strategies to improve your health and the health of our planet:

  1.     Eat meatless once a week, choosing plant-based protein like beans, chickpeas or lentils instead of animal protein
  2.     Follow the Canada’s Food Guide, filling half of your plate with vegetables and fruits
  3.     Limit intake of highly processed foods
  4.     Reduce food waste, planning your meals and buying exactly what you and your family needs
