Is Laying On The Floor Good For Your Back?

Laying on the floor is a great way to stretch your back. All day you may be sitting in the car, at work or at home and your spine is constantly bent forward in flexion like the picture on the right:

This puts tremendous pressure on the spine, the muscle and the joints. This can lead to achiness and soreness, especially in the upper and lower back regions.

Laying on the ground can give your spine a break by allowing to extend and stretch like this picture on the left:

Here are a few simple tips to get the most out of lying on your back:

  • Choose a flat firm surface on the ground, a cushy mattress will not do
  • Lay flat with your legs extended, if however you are unable to do so, place a pillow under the knees
  • Stretch the hands out like a windmill in either directions, palms up
  • Close your eyes and focus on all the body weight transferring downwards at all the contact points to the ground
  • Take nice deep and slow breaths at a steady pace. Ensure you have a good pace otherwise you might turn blue.
  • Spend 5 to 7 minutes in this posture.  Afterwards do 5 minutes of foam rolling!

Congratulations, you are now well grounded!
