If you have been to our clinic recently you may have noticed this colourful tape on some our patients:
You may have also seen it on an athlete at the olympics:
Wherever you look, it appears this colourful tape is everywhere … but what does it do?
The exact mechanism on how the tape works is not clear but it appears to help support injured muscles, tendons and ligaments. The tape is elastic and stretches in only one direction when pulled. This stretching property of the tape can help assist muscles movement. This can help reduce the load on injured muscle, decreasing recovery times.
Another way the tape helps is by reducing swelling. Applying kinesiotape allows the body to channel away the swelling, helping decrease the swelling faster. This leads to less swelling and a quicker healing time.
